Melinda Hamilton
Councilmember Seat 7
Sunnyvale City Council
Melinda Hamilton set our record for the most
money collected from unions, almost $30,000 alone (contributions plus
independent expenditures) from the Sunnyvale Public Safety Officers Association.
She certainly returned the favor while in office by granting the city employees
some of the largest raises ever, more than twice the rate that private industry
was giving. Melinda also willingly accepted over $9,000 in non-monetary donations
from the AFL-CIO Labor Council for supplies for “volunteers,” mailer, phone
banking and salaries to pay the “volunteers.” During her last campaign, Melinda railed on the City’s Downtown plan,
which in her words “Would allow Mozart Style buildings all along Mathilda.” (For
those who are not aware, the Mozart Buildings are the four and five story
high-rise office buildings at the corner of Washington and Mathilda). Well, Mel
sure seems to be singing a different tune now after taking thousands of dollars
from numerous multi-story developers, including the developer who would benefit
greatly from the Mary Avenue bridge. It’s impressive to see how much she can
change in less than four years.
While in office she voted for several multi-story development projects, some
even adjacent to residential neighborhoods (well, it wasn’t her neighborhood!).
We will see, but it would certainly seem odd to take money from high-rise
developers and then not want to return the favor during the next four years.
